Music to our ears: 3 LGBT+ artists to listen to NOW

March 2, 2018 - Entertainment, Music - , ,

By Brian Goins

Here’s our rundown of three of our favorite local LGBT musicians on the musical landscape and what to expect:

DAPHNE WILLIS, “FREAKS LIKE ME”

In a nine-track set that is one part pop and three parts unapologetic rock, Daphne Willis delivers a show-stopping work that goes above and beyond anything on radio today.

WHAT TO KNOW

Current single: “Somebody’s Someone,” a ballad anthem about belonging.

Our pick: “Out of the Black,” a funky pop groove reminiscent of Amy Winehouse.

Destined to be the breakout: “Unafraid” is a great community anthem about pulling together to fight for our rights.

KRISTEN FORD, “TRAVEL SONGS”

Acoustic and folk music has never sounded better. The easy, smooth vocals and instrumental plays softly against a quiet, distant angst. Appropriately, the music is the perfect soundtrack for a road trip, juxtaposed against picturesque landscapes and new adventures. It’s an ethereal experience, not unlike taking a vacation without leaving your sofa.

WHAT TO KNOW

Current single: “Berlin,” featuring guest vocalist Jenna McClelland, is an ethereal acoustic masterpiece that pairs best with lazy summer afternoons.

Our pick: “Extraordinary,” an acoustic gem laced with strings and guitar and a vocal that is dreamlike.

Destined to be the breakout: “Not Leavin’” breaks with the folk sound a bit with a more rock-inspired rhythm.

CHELEY TACKETT, “BUCKEYE”

Tackett’s driving, country and Americana infused album stands out in the crowd with its earnest, life-infused songwriting.

WHAT TO KNOW

Current single:  “Bitter Girl” opens the album with a traditional country sound.

Our pick: “$2 Bill,” an emotional track based on a family story.

Destined to be the breakout: “The Healer,” an emotional song about the role you can choose to play in relationships. The song, co-written by Tackett and Randall Clay, was a semi-finalist in the Americana category of International Songwriting Competition.
